Generate Exchange Online Message Trace Files

StoreLog is a free tool that helps you make Exchange Online message tracking files easily. It uses a command called Get-MessageTrace in the background, saving you from using complex scripts. You can then import these message traces into an SQL database for simple searching.

What is Message Trace in Exchange Online?

The Message Trace feature in the Exchange Administration Center for Exchange Online allows you to create CSV files with details like subject, sender, recipient, time, and size of emails processed by Exchange Online within the last 10 days. These files are crucial for analyzing email traffic, generating reports, or searching for messages to meet legal requirements. Additionally, you can produce these Office 365 message tracking files using the Get-MessageTrace cmdlet in Exchange Online PowerShell

The Benefits of StoreLog Versus Scripts Based on Get-MessageTrace Cmdlet

Numerous online scripts that utilize the Get-MessageTrace command can be intricate. The results from Get-MessageTrace are capped at 5,000 messages, necessitating the use of PowerShell scripts for managing pages. StoreLog simplifies this procedure by taking care of all the details for you. Just select the date from which the Message Trace files will be created and StoreLog will generate hourly message trace files containing all mail traffic events. 
Here are StoreLog’s main features: 

  • Free Windows application with basic requirements
  • Preserves all Get-MessageTrace details, including Received date, Sender Address, Recipient Address, Subject, Status, To IP, From IP, Size, MessageId, MessageTraceId.
  • Generates message trace files in a format similar to CSV files used in various versions of On-premises Exchange Server.  
  • The process can be automated using Windows Scheduler. 
  • StoreLog is very fast, capable of generating 1 million message trace files in less than 25 minutes.
  • Utilizes the same trace file creation engine as our Office 365 reporting product: Promodag Reports

After Tracing Messages in Exchange Online, You Can:
